William Adams: From ENGLISH CASTAWAY to JAPANESE LORD
Without a doubt, James Clavell’s novel "Shōgun" has become a certified classic over the past 5 decades, one that has proven to be both culturally impactful AND creatively inspiring. But… What was it that inspired Clavell to come up with this near-1200 page masterpiece? Well actually, the story of John Blackthorne, while obviously fictitious, is rooted much deeper in actual history than one might think! That is because it is very much based on the life of William Adams, an English navigator who not only became the first Englishman to ever reach Japan, but who also ended up staying in Japan for two whole decades, forging a remarkably close relationship with the country’s most powerful leader, fully embracing a country and culture that could NOT have been more different from what he experienced back home, and arguably becoming the most legendary foreigner that ever lived in Japan!
In today’s video, we travel from a small town in southern England all the way to the Land of the Rising Sun, guided by the REAL story of the “Anjin”, one that, while certainly less action-packed, is not THAT much less interesting than what James Clavell and the creators of the 2024 FX adaptation were able to come up with!

Their story took us an impressive 400 years into the past, going from humble beginnings as gamblers and peddlers to experiencing a meteoric rise to power starting in the early 1900s. But moving from the island nation of Japan to MAINLAND ASIA, we encounter yet another collection ...

The flourishing of art & culture, economic prosperity, isolation from the rest of the world, an incredibly strict social order… and above all, peace. That is what we usually think about when we hear the term “Edo Period”! Under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate from 1603 until 1868, Japan was allowed to rebuild and heal after centuries of near-constant unrest, war and infighting, and not only ...

Japan, 1604: After a civil war that lasted for more than a century, legendary Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu did the impossible by uniting a country that seemed like it would be stuck in conflict for eternity. Active as a swordsmith during Japan’s Warring States Period, an especially violent time period even by JAPANESE standards, Muramasa’s blades gained recognition for their incredible sharpness and efficiency in battle, but according to some, those qualities came with a price: Muramasa was said to be a man haunted by his inner demons, a mind verging on madness who created swords that craved bloods...

While capturing a moment with a camera feels effortless today, it's a stark contrast to the limitations of the past. For most of human history, WORDS and ILLUSTRATIONS were our primary tools for preserving what we saw. However, the early 1800s witnessed a remarkable shift, as brilliant minds paved the way for a new method of capturing our world. In 1826, the earliest surviving photograph emerge...

The image of the Yakuza often conjures up visions of tough men covered in tattoos, engaged in a world of violence and power plays. While that is a pretty accurate description of what’s actually going on in the Japanese underworld, that’s only ONE part of the whole picture, ignoring one very crucial part that is more often than not completely overlooked: The complex and multifaceted lives of the...

I love the story of William Adams. It’s very interesting. It’s also very ironic that Edo Japan’s persecution of Catholic Christians was the result of William Adams, a Protestant Christian, advising the Shogunate to order all Japanese Catholics to abandon their faith. Which in itself was influenced by the Portuguese Jesuits, who had already started missions in Japan before Adams’s arrival, not liking that Adams was even there in the first place.

My father in law was a bancho. Skipped highschool and was the strongest out of the group. He was very popular and students from other schools would try to join his group. He got lucky with a business opportunity and eventually became really wealthy but his personality has not changed a bit... still an asshole. His oldest son (my brother in law) unfortunately followed his footsteps and also became a school delinquent but at that point organized gangs were not as prevalent so he just ended up being outcast by most people and took him a way to find his way in society.
